What Home Health Benefits Are Covered by Medicaid?

We all want our loved ones to be happy, healthy, and in their own homes. But sometimes health care needs can make that challenging. Luckily, some Medicaid members have benefits that can make home health care a little easier. More than just in-home help, these services can make life easier for the caregiver as well.

In-Home Health Care Medicaid Benefits

This program goes by many names: Consumer-directed care, participant-directed services, cash and counseling, and self-directed care are just a few. The main idea is this: under some state Medicaid programs, you can be paid to be a caregiver.

If you’re a caregiver, it often comes with sacrificing your day job. These programs can help you to continue to pay the bills while attending to the needs of your loved ones.

Home Safety Modifications

Many families want to keep their loved ones in their homes for as long as possible, and using their Medicaid benefits can make that easier for them. Often, people have to go into assisted living facilities simply because their home is not accessible or safe for someone with mobility issues. A small set of stairs can cause big problems after a person becomes unable to get around by themselves.

Luckily, Medicaid has a program called money follows the person. This program grants money to the state* that can then be allocated to help your loved one make changes to their home so that they can transition out of an assisted living facility.  Some of the modifications available are:

  • Wheelchair ramps
  • Widened doorways
  • Lowered countertops
  • Stairlifts
  • Handlebars
  • Improved lighting

*Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming do not participate in this program.

At-Home Food Delivery

Another service that helps people live independently and in their homes is food delivery. Most Medicaid plans cover these meals, but specifics differ by state. They can include fresh, frozen, and shelf-stable meals. Meals can be delivered once a day or every few days. As a caregiver, having this checked off of your list can be a huge help.

You can help your family member choose the provider that fits their needs, and meals can be customized for allergy requirements. Each state has standards in place that ensure the food provided is high quality and prepared in a clean environment.

Medical Supply Deliveries

Medicaid can also cover the cost of many medical supplies. Paying for these supplies out of pocket can otherwise be a financial burden. Having the right supplies is essential for following a plan of care.

That’s where Home Care Delivered comes in. We have many supplies that are covered by Medicaid and can be shipped directly to your door. Here is a handy guide for what HCD can do for you:
